Want Happiness? Get Education

A friend recently posted the following quote on their Facebook page:

"Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." -- Karen Kaiser Clark

And it inspired me to answer the question I have been asked several times - "Do I have to continue with education?"

Quite frankly, no. It is optional.

But remember, life will continue to change. New challenges will be presented as well as new opportunities. Growing into those challenges and those opportunities are your choice. Understand each of those challenges and opportunities are a prospect to learn—to be educated—to glean continuing education. Each offer you the opportunity to grow...and be happy.

On many occasions I have heard people state, "I just want to be happy" or "All I want is for my children to be happy in life." Continuing education is the path to being happy (Cue Pharrell Williams and the dancing minions).

Let me break it down for you:

  • Education = Knowledge.

  • Knowledge = Power.

  • Power = Respect.

  • Respect = Happiness.

We are happiest when we are respected. Respected for the work we do, respected within our home by our family and friends, respected for the people we are, and especially when we respect ourselves. Education provides respect.

Personally, continuing education can help you find a new pastime or hobby. It can be the path to achieving a personal goal—like learning a new language (my current challenge and opportunity), learning to play a guitar, learning a new activity or sport.

Professionally, continuing education allows you to add skills to your resume. It can provide you the classes or programs or information you need to take the next step in your career path. The knowledge needed to possibly achieve that promotion you wanted or take that leap into a new career.

Our industry has some many avenues and paths you can take to achieve these professional goals and accomplishments. Webinars, certifications, industry forums and conferences, white papers, college programs and courses—the list is endless. Check out my August blog post 'Options Abound - Continuing Education' for a multitude of examples.

Why wouldn't you choose growth? Why wouldn't you grab that piece of happiness?

What continuing education to you want to achieve?

Oh, and Laurel Coote, thanks for the inspiration!
