UNITE HERE union hotel workers have reached a settlement with Marriott International to end strikes in Detroit and Oakland, California.

The hotel workers union is continuing to strike at 22 properties in six other destinations: San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, Maui, Oahu and Boston.

UNITE HERE said the ratified contract agreement covered issues such as working conditions, automation and wages and benefits, and would reveal full details of the settlement after the remaining six destinations have reached agreements.

“We are encouraged by the progress achieved in resolving the strikes in Oakland and Detroit with strong, fair contracts, and are hopeful that similar progress can be achieved in the other six cities still on strike,” said D. Taylor, international president of UNITE HERE.

“The progress made by Marriott this week in both cities shows that they are able to make reasonable movement, and we are hopeful that soon one job will be enough to live with dignity on at every Marriott in all cities," he added.

A Marriott International spokesperson who did not wish to be named offered the following response to the news: "The contracts for Oakland and Detroit have been ratified.

"We look forward to welcoming our associates back to work."
