Golf Course in, Lagoon Out at Wynn Las Vegas

Wynn Resorts has scuttled its lagoon project but is restoring its 18-hole Tom Fazio designed golf course that has been closed since December 2017, according to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Las Vegas-area newspaper cited Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox as saying the 2016 proposal to develop a small lake next to a new convention facility near Wynn Las Vegas is being abandoned. The 38-acre lagoon was to be part of a 400,000-square-foot convention center project with three hotel towers.

The lagoon would have hosted watersports during the day and feature fireworks and floats each night.

The convention center project, currently under construction just north of Sands Avenue and east of the Wynn Las Vegas tower, is still scheduled to open in 12 months.

It will offer 200,000 square feet of rentable space, according to the report.

“From April 2016 to today, we always struggled with Phase 2 of Paradise Park,” Maddox told analysts during a conference call with investors and reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “How are we going to make a room tower in a town with a lot of rooms pencil along with a lagoon?

"We weren’t really interested in building a large public swimming pool for the Las Vegas Strip," he added. "So we just decided, ‘Let’s go with Phase 1.’ We know the convention center is going to work.”
