Destination El Paso Taps Hometown Veteran to Lead DMO

Destination El Paso looked inward to tap its new president and CEO, appointing Visit El Paso Executive Director Brooke Underwood to the DMO’s top role effective June 1.

"Stepping into this role is both exciting and deeply personal for me,” said Underwood in a media release announcing the appointment. “Over the last 18 years, I’ve been fortunate to build my career here, work alongside incredible people and help showcase the amazing qualities of my hometown. I’m honored to lead the organization into its next chapter and continue working with our community partners, stakeholders and team to promote everything that makes El Paso so special.”

Underwood, the first native El Pasoan to lead the bureau in more than 25 years, will oversee Destination El Paso’s three divisions: Visit El Paso, El Paso Live and El Paso Water Parks. She is also the first woman to lead the DMO.  

Underwood began her DMO career with Visit El Paso in 2008, joining as director of convention development, attracting meetings, conventions, sporting events and group business to the region. She was subsequently promoted to assistant general manager before assuming the role of executive director of Visit El Paso.

"Her deep understanding of the destination, proven leadership and passion for the community make her uniquely qualified to lead the organization into its next chapter. Previously, he worked as the Asia, Canada, Pacific Northwest and Western U.S. editor at Travel Weekly magazine and TravelAge West. Before joining the dual editorial staff producing destination sections for Travel Weekly and TravelAge West, Tyler was the Africa, Israel, Middle East, Switzerland and Pacific Northwest editor at TravelAge West. He also undertook general news and feature assignments while working at the magazines. 

 

Besides reporting on the travel trade, Tyler has covered the real estate industry, held various editorial positions at the San Francisco-based national satire magazine The Nose, wrote freelance technology industry pieces and covered the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders for a bilingual newspaper in San Francisco. He has a B.A. in Journalism from San Francisco State University, where he worked in various editorial capacities on its award-winning student magazine, Prism.
