N.J. Meadowlands on Track to Welcome $3 Bln. Convention Center Project

The Greater New York City region is set to welcome a major new convention center, if plans for a $3 billion project come to fruition.

The multi-use convention and event center would be located on a former sports arena site within the Meadowlands Sports Complex and adjacent to the massive American Dream Mall, all located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, eight miles from Manhattan.

According to the Meadowlands Chamber, which markets the area, the proposal aims to transform the site into a year-round destination for events, tourism and economic activity.

According to the Chamber, the plan, led by Meadowlands Chamber President & CEO Jim Kirkos, includes the following:

  • 300,000-sq.-ft. exhibit hall (divisible into three halls)
  • 60,000-sq.-ft. main ballroom
  • 100,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, with 75 breakout rooms
  • 6,000-seat flexible arena
  • 1,000-key headquarters hotel
  • 70,000-sq.-ft. outdoor terrace
  • 2,000 structured parking spaces

A market and economic analysis conducted as part of the project’s Scoping Program estimates that the venue could host 313 events annually, drawing more than 2 million attendees and generating more than $30 billion in economic activity over the next 30 years.

Major proponents of the plan include state senator Paul A. Sarlo and former Governor Phil Murphy, as part of New Jersey’s State and Local Fiscal Recovery Program. The plan will now fall under the purview of current Governor Mikie Sherrill.

“The Meadowlands has always been a cornerstone of New Jersey’s economy. This plan shows what’s possible when we invest in smart planning and create a clear path forward that the next administration can evaluate and build upon,” Sarlo said in a media release. “This is no longer a conceptual conversation."

Meadowlands Convention Center Design Details

The convention center would be designed by Atlanta-based TVS Design, whose past work has included the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall Expansion, Manhattan’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center expansion, Puerto Rico Convention Center, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the new Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to reports, the facility’s design will leverage a vertical stacking of key elements, such as loading, parking, meeting rooms and hospitality components, which will enable it to hold several events simultaneously.

According to the Chamber, the planning phase of the project is anticipated to be completed before the end of 2026, with final traffic recommendations and an organizational and financial operating model expected to be done this summer.

“The design is complete, the market demand is clear, and the remaining analysis will be finalized soon,” Kirkos affirmed in the release. “We’ve put a serious, credible development option on the table, positioning the state to determine next steps early in the incoming administration.”

A key finding of the Scoping Program is that the project will provide an opportunity to improve circulation across the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which also includes MetLife Stadium, home field of the NFL New York Giants and New York Jets, as well as being a major concert venue.

According to the Chamber, the facility will not be activated on NFL game days.
