Marriott Union Workers Plan Labor Day Unrest

Thousands of Marriott International union workers across eight U.S. destinations are planning massive demonstrations and civil disobedience on Labor Day, September 3 in response to an ongoing contract fight.

UNITE HERE union Marriott workers, including hotel housekeepers, front desk reception, bellmen, cooks, dishwashers and servers will target downtown Marriott hotels in San Francisco, Boston, Honolulu, Seattle, San Diego, Detroit, Baltimore and Maui.

After months of negotiations, contracts expired for Marriott workers in more than half a dozen cities and an agreement has yet to be reached. According to UNITE HERE, union workers in the eight destinations will mobilize on Labor Day to demand movement at the bargaining table for wages that will allow them to afford to live in the communities where they work, basic job protection and safer working conditions and standards.

This is the second mass day of national demonstrations, after more than 4,000 Marriott workers turned out in seven cities across the U.S. in June 2018 before many of their contracts expired.

UNITE HERE represents 270,000 members working in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation and airport industries in the U.S. and Canada.
