Houston Weathers Hurricane Ike

The Greater Houston CVB’s main campus in downtown Houston is back in business, announced Greg Ortale, the bureau’s president and CEO.

Most major event venues in Houston reportedly are intact, with the exception of Reliant Stadium. Ike ripped off sections of the football stadium’s roof. All events at the stadium and Reliant Park have been canceled at least until Sept. 21, according to information from Reliant Park’s website.

Meanwhile, several hundred people are being sheltered at the city’s George R. Brown Convention Center, said the facility’s general manager, Luther Villagomez.

“Unlike during Katrina in 2005, when we housed thousands of displaced storm victims from Louisiana, this is, by far, a much smaller operation. But, being in the actual disaster zone has, understandably, meant that we have not received the outpouring of citizen volunteers that we had three years ago. As a result, our staff has manned the building throughout the storm and recovery, putting in long hours of yeoman work. I am very proud of [the convention] staff,” Villagomez said in a statement.

Several functions scheduled for last weekend and early this week have been rescheduled, including meetings of the Theta Antiques Charity Show and Houston Antique Dealers.
