Once the off-season mainstay of budget properties in secondary markets, religious meetings have a lot more options available to them these days. Increasingly, destinations and properties are eager to capture what is viewed as a stable and consistent source of business.

According to a recent poll of planner members of the Religious Conference Management Association, religious meetings are taking advantage of their new-found clout by choosing downtown hotels, conference centers and even resorts.

RCMA Survey Shows Changing Preferences

While downtown hotels still garner the most religious meetings, the number of groups heading to resort destinations is on a steady upswing. This was among the findings of the Religious Conference Management Association (RCMA), which recently released its annual survey, citing the practices and preferences of its meeting planner members in 2009.

The survey reported that 10.2 million people attended meetings conducted by RCMA members last year, while the number of meetings totaled 13,394.

RCMA Offers Conference Comps

The Religious Conference Management Association (RCMA) is offering a program to pay the expenses of planners who attend the organization's 39th World Conference and Expo in Tampa, Fla.

Scheduled for Jan. 25-28, 2011 at the Tampa Bay Convention Center, RCMA is offering a Hosted Buyer Scholarship Program, which would pay individual planner expenses such as the event's registration fee, four nights of lodging and airfare up to $300.
