Hawaii's Hurricane Lane Downgraded to Category 2; Massive Flooding Reported

Hawaii’s Hurricane Lane has been downgraded to Category 2 storm, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The hurricane reached Category 5 status late Tuesday but weakened to a Category 4 storm Wednesday morning and fell to Category 3 late Thursday.

The Island of Hawaii, or Big Island, has been inundated by more than 31 inches of rain, according to news reports, with flooding impacting Hilo and other areas. Flash flood warnings have been issued for large parts of the island.

Hurricane warnings have been issued to Maui and Oahu, with the now-weakening storm on track to skim the southern part of the islands as it works its way west and out to sea.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for Hawaii Wednesday.

Additional information about the status of Hurricane Lane is available via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Hawaii Tourism Authority is also maintaining Hurricane Lane updates is the storm progresses.
