Site & Destination Selection with Accommodation and ADA in Mind

You’ve stated on your registration or sign-up information, “Tell us what you need to fully participate in the meeting/event,” and used the new wheelchair International Symbol of Access to indicate you are seeking information. You’ve read the checklists from the U.S. Department of Justice or similar organization in your country to know what you must accommodate. The venue--hotel, convention center, restaurant, museum, etc.--tells you they are “ADA compliant” and you think you’re done.

“ADA Compliant” does not always mean accessible. Including and accommodating those with visible and invisible disabilities allows all who want to attend our events welcome and able to participate. It is our job--whether we are with a destination, venue or we are a planner for the event--to be more aware of what to look for and ask for when selecting destinations and sites, and also provide information that will help us convey to our speakers how to be inclusive in their presentations.
